At the time it was feared that more and more countries would be taken over by communism, as Eastern Europe, China, Cuba, North Korea and North Vietnam already had been, with the eventual result of a vast global communist alliance which could then either attack the US or at least subject the US to economic strangulation. According to the Truman Doctrine, the US intended to prevent any more countries from being taken over by communism, so when the communist north attacked the non-communist south, the US came to the aid of the south, even though that effort eventually failed, and Vietnam is today a single communist country.
