The Union flag was the same United States flag that existed before the US Civil War began. Because the United States never recognized the Confederacy as a nation, the Union flag represented all of the states and territories of the US during the war.

In 1859, the flag had 32 stars with the addition of Minnesota. From July 186 to July 1863, after Kansas became a state, the flag had 33 stars. They were arranged in 5 rows: 7 stars in 1st and 2nd row, 5 stars in 3rd row and 7 stars in 4th & 5th rows.

Same as today with regard to the thirteen stripes, but the constellation was different, with between 33, 34 and 35 stars instead of the 50 stars on the US flag today. Although the Confederate states had seceded from the Union, it was not recognized and they were still represented on the Union civil war flag. There were 33 stars (for 33 states) at the start of the Civil War and 35 by the end of the war for the addition of West Virginia. Nevada joined the US in October 1864 but their star was notadded to the US flag until July 4th 1865. The Civil War ended between April and May 1865 with General Lee's surrender and CSA President Jefferson Davis' capture.
