France wanted Germany to suffer badly as revenge for France's losses. Britain wanted the Treaty to be harsh, but not too harsh that it made Germany too weak to stop a possible communism spread from Russia to Western Europe. (N.B. This was Lloyd George's fear; the public just wanted Germany to suffer.) America felt it should stay out as much as possible of future European affairs, and only wanted to make peace with Germany and restrict her so she wouldn't start another war. Why did the US reject the Treaty of Versailles and what did this mean for creation and smooth?

The United States rejected the Treaty of Versailles because they did not want to punish Germany that harshly. The U.S. felt that the treaty was punishing Germany the wrong way and felt that Germany would respond back. The treaty was made in a way that Germany would have no choice but to fight the treaty and that is a major reason for World War 2. By the U.S. not signing the treaty, they were not immediately involved in World War 2.

The French thought the Treaty of Versailles wasn't being hard enough on the Germans. The Germans had caused the death of 2 million French and France wanted 'revenge' on Germany. France wanted Germany to pay full reparations to France and if Germany resisted France would send in their army to force Germany to 'pay up', which they ultimately did.
