On February 6,1862, Commodore Andrew Foote's Union squadron of 6 gunboats brought Fort Henry under bombardment and managed to obtain the surrendering of the Confederate garrison of 79 artillery men. The fort was then seized by Grant's Union Army, which was promptly moved overland against Fort Donelson.
The victory opened the control of the River Cumberland to the Union forces.
