The Confederate army was probably very happy the first day; they had a very successful start. The next day they lost, so the Union was probably happy.

A victory in the North would have made the South angry and they would get all pumped up to win the next battle. Sort of like when the Texans tried to fight for their independence against Mexico, even though they lost the Battle of the Alamo, it gave them spirit. It even became their battle cry: "Remember the Alamo!"
I think that it in the North and South, that the days and nights in Winter are cold and long. Because I think this, is because the North and South are far away from the equator. Hope that helped. :)
