Germany didn't have to torpedoed a passenger ship even if it was smuggling weapons. And the Zimmerman telegraph offered Mexico their land that they had lost and had been taken from America and this message came from Germany which made USA join the war because Germany wanted to attack them.

Several incidents led to the USA joining ww1 such as the bombing of the Lusitania but I suppose they joined the war principally because of the re-introduction of Unrestricted Submarine Warfare by the Kaiser...

The sinking of the Lusitania and similar incidents drew the US into World War 1?

The sinking of the Lusitania was the main reason the United States joined World War I. Previously the United States had avoided becoming involved in the War but on May 7, 1915 the Germans bombed and sunk the Lusitania. This enraged the people of the U.S because the Lusitania was a pleasure cruise carrying U.S and British civilians. The people of the Unites States called for action, therefore the government and military became involved in the war.

What happened during the sinking of the lusitania?

The Lusitania was torpedoed on May 7th 1915, by the German U-Boat U-20. What is not as widely known is that Germany had given many public warnings, even going so far as to publish those warnings in American Newspapers for some time prior to the sinking of the Lusitania, that any vessel found entering their controlled waters would be subject to immediate attack. Despite this the Lusitania was sent out to be destroyed to sway public opinion about entering the war. It was found that the Lusitania was carrying munitions and so was supporting their enemy and a military target. BUT, later, a German U-boat sunk an Italian liner without warning, killing 272 people, including 27 Americans, which turned US public opinion against Germany. And in a third attack, Germans sunk the American liner Housatonic. So while people still argue that the Lusitania was carrying about 173 tons of war munitions for Britain, Germany had no excuse for sinking other ships. The Lusitania argument is largely viewed as merely an excuse only found in the aftermath of Lusitania's loss.

Major events in the ending of World War 1?

The Russian Revolution led to a desire in Russia to withdraw from the Tsar's war. They negotiated the Treaty of Brest-Litovsk. It was a disastrous treaty for Russia but Lenin bet that Germany would soon be defeated so the treaty would be null and void and Russia would lose nothing. America's entry following the sinking of the Lusitania and the Zimmerman Telegram sealed Germany's fate. German troops transferred from the Eastern Front couldn't compare to US troops flooding in, despite weak tactics. Italy not joining the war in 1914 on Germany's side followed by them switching to join the UK and France in 1915 was a semi-important reason. The battles in particular showed that France and Britain were slowly pushing forward, with far superior technology such as the tanks.

Why did US go to war in the First World War?

What two German actions caused the U.S. to enter world war 1?

It was actually one action, and one diplomatic overture.Germany was attacking neutral US ships without warning, after promising not to. And in an apparent attempt to deflect the US, the Germans offered an alliance to Mexico, as detailed in the Zimmerman Telegram intercepted by the British. The Germans sunk the Lusitania believing that it carried supplies to Britain as well as arms in order to help the war effort. It was carrying some American passengers when it was torpedoed, and this led to America joining the war. However, Germany may have been justified, as the ship may have actually been supplying Britain with much needed supplies in direct disregard of the sanctions imposed by Germany. In any effect, both the Lusitania and the Zimmerman affair swung American popular opinion in favor of interceding (effectively) in the conflict.

How did the sinking of the lusitana affect world war 1?

The Lusitania was important because it shook the United States and got them thinking about joining the war (World War I). It is true that America did not declare war on Germany until two years after the initial sinking of the Lusitania, it still played into the final decision.

What did the Lusitania mean to the US?

The Lusitania was a passenger liner which was torpedoed on May 7, 1915 by the German submarine U-20. This occurred because Germany set up a submarine blockade, threatenng to attack any vessel in the seas around Great Britain during World War I. In truth, Lusitania was secretly carrying war supplies to the Allies (you must remember that at this time America had not joined the war yet). Thus, the first significance of Lusitania to the US was that it was an attempt to transport war supplies from the US to Great Britain. Another important factor was that Lusitania killed 128 Americans. This created quite a bit of bitterness between the US and Germany, which made Germany obliged that it would no longer fire without warning. (However, as you will soon see, when Germany again declared unrestricted submarine warfare, the US was drawn into the war). Thus another important part of the Lusitania attack was it being the catalyst for America's joining World War I.
