It depended on the type of camp. If you were in an extermination camp the new arrivals were divided into 'fit for work' and 'unfit for work'. Those who were unfit were taken away and gassed as quickly as possible. Most of the others were worked to death over a period of months: they had to do hard manual work without enough food.

In other types of camps ('ordinary' concentration camps) you were severely beaten, also humiliated, and then you had to do hard labour - again without enough food. If you were very lucky you might get an office job.

[Warning: graphic description]

* You arrive in a train (cattle car), where you were cramped in with up to 100 other prisoners, without food, water, or sanitary facilities, often for days on end. * "Raus! Raus!" You are taken off the train, to shouts, whips, and barking German shepherd attack dogs. * You are told to stand in one of two lines: men on one side, women and children to the other other. * You wait for the "selection", when a Nazi officer waves his stick, sending you in one direction or the other. * [Option A] Life: * ** They strip you of clothing and everything else you own. ** You stand under showers (water) -- could be freezing or scalding. ** They shave all your hair (head and groin). ** In some cases, you are tatooed on your arm with your new id (number). ** You are given a prisoner's striped pajamas and shoes -- no need to fit you. ** You are assigned to a work brigade. ** In some cases, you will go through more selections and transferred to a mine, factory or other concentration camp. ** [Most prisoners die of starvation, disease, and abuse.]

* [Option B] Death: * ** The majority of all arrivals end up here. ** You are herded / chased into a building ** You take off all of your clothes.

** You are marched as a group into a room with showers. (Sometime you get a bar of soap first--to lull you into hope.) ** The doors are shut airtight ** The lights go off. ** The Zyklon B poison nerve gas pellets are poured in through the ceiling by a Nazi soldier wearing a gas mask. ** At this point, pandemonium, panic, Horror and screaming break out, while the stronger climb on top of the weaker, gasping for a breath of air. ** It takes 5-15 minutes to die and for asphyxiation to be complete. ** The doors are open.

** The bodies are dragged out, one by one, to be tossed into the furnace (crematorium).

Upon arrival, you were either sent to work to death, to the gas chambers, or some people with unique characteristics (twins, giants, etc.) were sent to Dr. Josef Mengele.

+++

Mengele was a genuine doctor but was twisted by Nazism into performing extremely cruel experiments on inmates in the extermination camps.

The same as all the other camps, except they didn't work at factories or outside farms (it was not a labor camp like Plaszow).
