the disadvantages were that they were poorly trained and most often disorganized. since they were volunteers, many felt free to return home at will to help harvest or keep buisness going. Also congress was slow in supplying money for war. Another disadvantage for the North, in general, was that it had to win, and had to attack. The South merely had to defend, and a "tie" (i.e., a long drawn-out war with no real winner) would be a victory for the South and a loss for the North.
Some intangible disadvantages for both the Confederacy and the Union during the Civil War was the loss of ways to get supplies to the battlegrounds. There were many people in the South willing to help the North but finding them was impossible.
North:
Lack of an emotive war-aim
The job of doing the invading
Having to blockade hundreds of miles of enemy coastline
Lack of a cavalry tradition
(At the beginning) Danger of Britain helping the Confederates
South:
Smaller population, largely slaves
Lack of industrial manufacturing
Disadvantage in artillery
Inability to export cotton in exchange for war-supplies
Incompetent President
Union disadvantages:
Some of the best officers of the US Army had resigned to join the Confederates.
Lack of cavalry - most young Northerners could not ride or shoot
No strong tradition of encouraging school-leavers to go for an army career.
Most battles were on terrain unfamiliar to Northern commanders
Dubious war-mission - simply to defend the Union.
Prospect of having to fight Britain and France.
Their President had to face an election in mid-war.
Confederate disadvantages:
Much smaller population from which to recruit armies.
Disadvantage in artillery, facing enemy with new rifled cannon
No industrial capability to make war-supplies
Less railroad mileage and capability of moving armies by train
Southern coast would be blcokaded
A President who could not control his Generals or his cabinet
They did not have very good leadership.
