Estavanico is one name for the African slave who traveled for eight years with Álvar Núñez Cabeza de Vaca, after the 1527 Spanish expedition to Tampa Bay failed. The Spanish crossed the Gulf of Mexico to reach Spanish Mexico, but only 4 survived after long enslavement by natives in coastal Texas. En route to Mexico City, they crossed what is now the southwest US.
