Many joined the armed forces. Many others migrated to urban centers to work in defense plants. They needed to adapt quickly to white culture and at the end of the war most of them did not return to reservation life. For some, it brought the sense of having lost their roots.

AnswerThere were the Zoot Suit riots in California, however they were an abberation. In the military they were generally accepted. The US Navy was slow and reluctant to fully integrate. No group had it as bad as US blacks.

An elderly Mexican-American, father of a friend of mine, told me the Army seemed a bit confused , and assigned the lighter skinned Mexican-Americans with the white troops, and the dark-skinned ones to Black units.

During World War II, Mexicans faced some job discrimination in areas from those who were white and needed work. However, due to the draft, there were plenty of job openings.

Mexicans were taken back to Mexico....but you'll see Mexicans are going to take over the U.S. in a few years.
