The division between continents is not as easily done as might be imagined. There is no continent between Africa and Asia. Although many would indicate that the Indian sub-continent is in that position along with the Middle East. At present Asia is bounded by the Arctic, Pacific, and Indian oceans. The western boundary, with Europe, runs north-south along the eastern Ural Mountains; the Caspian, Black, Aegean, and Mediterranean seas; the Suez Canal; and the Red Sea.

The continents have been separated by rivers in the past - the Nile and the Don. The continents have also been divided by isthmuses which set the border between Europe and Asia at the isthmus between the Black Sea and the Caspian Sea, and the border between Asia and Africa at the isthmus between the Red Sea and the mouth of Lake Bardawil on the Mediterranean Sea.

The Romans and folks during the Middle Ages used the Isthmus of Suez as the boundary between Asia and Africa, but most took it to be the Nile or the western border of Egypt.
