Cochlear implants transmit the sound waves and deliver them to the part of the brain the makes the waves and vibrations into noises. A hearing aid is placed on the ear and transmits the sound into a device placed in the skull.

The cochlea is the spiral "snail-like" chamber of bones that contain the inner ear bones used by the body to collect and transmit sound impulses to the auditory nerves. When damaged, a cochlear implant can replace its lost ability and help a deaf person hear again, if the nerves are undamaged.
