Best Answer

Basic duties of pharmacy technicians in Ontario include greeting the patient, taking all of their information (DOB, Allergies, drug plans), inputting this and Rx (prescription) info into a computer, counting, packaging and labelling the Rx, and mixing the Rx if it is a compound (cream or lotion).

In addition, pharmacy technicians assist pharmacist in so many things and take care of the drug store when necessary. They are one of the reasons to the success of a pharmacy and so far, I haven't seen any pharmacy without any pharmacy technician working.

Pharmacy technicians work in pharmacies located in hospitals, clinics, and hospitals filling prescriptions written by doctors. Attention to detail is very important. The pharmacy technician is an integral part of the healthcare team. According to the Government's Occupational Outlook Handbook, this career is expected to increase by 25% through the year 2018! This means that this is a stable career choice. Pharmacy tech's make $16-$19 an hour, which means it's a lucrative career choice too!

You do a lot really. You fill prescriptions, label the medicine bottles after printing out the correct label, input info into computers such as patient info and also the prescription itself (you have to scan it and type it out and it can take getting use to dr's handwriting), answer phones, unload you orders and put them away, work the register, deal with good and bad customers, mix liquids, do compounds (depending on where you work). The things I just described are mainly for Retail pharmacies. hospital is a bit different. In hospital you get to run the floors and transport meds, med carts, load and unload the carts for each room, you get to have the choice (if your certified or not) to be able to do IV meds (i thought it was fun) *when you do IV meds you have to get your apron on, gloves, shoe covers etc.. and go in your special work area and use needs to draw up whatever meds you need and inject them into an iv bag*, you work the computers with patient info, shoot meds up a tube (like the tubes at drive thru banks), Dont really deal with patients, you put away your orders, the meds at a hospital arent like retail. Retail meds are in a bottle and such like Tylenol and at the hospital the are individually wrapped and you have to sort them. But when you are at the hospital you don't have patients that need a 30 day supply so that is why they don't come in large quantities. Usually they only need a few.
