John Smith originally said 1608. That isn't exactly though whole story. John Smith's version of events is the only source, and since the 1860s, skepticism has increasingly been expressed about its veracity. One reason for such doubt is, despite having published two earlier books about Virginia, Smith's earliest surviving account of his rescue by Pocahontas dates from 1616, nearly 10 years later, in a letter entreating the Queen to treat Pocahontas with dignity. The time gap in publishing his story raises the possibility Smith may have exaggerated or invented the event to enhance Pocahontas' image; however, in a recent book, J.A.O. Lemay points out Smith's earlier writing was primarily geographical and ethnographic in nature and did not dwell on his personal experience; hence there was no reason for him to write down the story until this point. Some experts have suggested, although Smith believed he had been rescued, he had in fact been involved in a ritual intended to symbolize his death and rebirth as a member of the tribe. So whether or not John Smith was really saved by Pocahontas, we may never know. But people originally say 1608.
Pocahontas risked her life for Smith But that is just a story that john Smith told: On his way to one village, Smith said that he was captured by Powhatan Indian scouts. Their chief, also called Powhatan, thought that Smith must die. Smith described that Powhatan's men held his head against a rock. Smith saw them raise their weapons. Suddenly, the cheif's daughter, Pocahontas, rushed forward. She "got [my] head in her arms," Smith declared, "and laid her own upon [mine] to save [me] from death."
They were not expecting anyone to rescue them.
James Reed

There is a folklore story of Pocahontas rescuing John Smith from execution by her father Powhatan but nothing about HER being rescued. The one time she might have been "rescued" was when she was captured by the English during Anglo-Indian hostilities in 1613, and held for ransom. During her captivity, she converted to Christianity and took the name Rebecca. When presented with the opportunity to return to her people, she chose to remain with the English so apparently she felt no need to be "rescued" at that point.
