They are some of the longest rivers in the world and they all have huge amounts of water and life forms in them. They are the sources of life and sustenance to the civilizations that have been built around them. They are all known for their flooding problems. They all flow from a central land area to the sea or ocean.

- They are all long rivers that cross great distances on their respective continents, either the longest or part of the longest river systems on their continents.

- They all represent one of the largest drainage systems on their respective continents (the Congo River basin in Africa is slightly larger than the Nile's).

- They all have multiple tributaries and various climates along their lengths.

- They are all navigable for a substantial portion of their lengths.

- All three ultimately flow to the Atlantic Ocean (only the Amazon directly).

Differences include: the Mississippi does not pass through more than one country; the Amazon does not have a delta; the three rivers have general flows in different directions (east, north, and south).
