While in the west love is seen as a must do thing, many cultures such as Buddhism see love as a form of attachment to the real world and a hindrance to achieving enlightenment. Even in the west there are several types of love each with their own entanglement:

  • Agape: A committed love between two people
  • Phileo: An affectionate, warm and tender platonic love or friendship with someone.
  • Storge It is a kind of family and friendship love.
  • Eros: A passionate and intense love that arouses romantic and sexual feelings

Add to this feelings like loyalty and patriotism which are closely related to love and the problem grows.

However the lack of love in a person for others would generally fall into one of two camps:

  • The movie villain who actively hates everyone and everybody would be a misanthrope (a person with general hatred, mistrust or disdain of the human species or human nature.)
  • A person who does not relate to feelings of love but holds back because he is aware of the fleeting nature of such relations would be a stoic. This is typified by the logical position taken by fictional characters like Star Trek's Mr. Spock.
