The part of the New World where Spanish and Portuguese are spoken is typically referred to as Latin America. This region includes countries in Central and South America where these languages are widely spoken due to the historical influence of Spanish and Portuguese colonization.

The local language spoken in Catalonia (the Spanish region northeast of Spain to which Barcelona belongs) is Catalan, another latin language, also spoken (if only a little) in Roussillon (South of France), and l'Alguer (a town in Sardaigne). Catalan is a major language also in: Balearic islands, Comunitat Valenciana (though they call it "Valencian") and it is the official language in Andorra.

The extreme northwest corner of Spain is called Galicia. Tbe official language is Spanish and I feel comfortable saying everyone can use Spanish. However, they do have their own language called Galician, or Gallego, which they use orally. Wikipedia states "Modern Galician and modern Portuguese are descended from a single Latin-derived language which linguists today call Galician-Portuguese or Mediaeval Galician or Old Portuguese. This common ancestral language was spoken in the territories of the mediaeval Kingdom of Galicia."

Actually Latino does not mean Spanish. A true "Latino would be someone who speaks Latin. People from the US call Spanish speakers Latinos, because they know that Spanish is a language derived from the old Latin language. So actually every person that speaks a language that comes from Latin is considered to be a Latino. That includes Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, Catalan, and French. Brazilians don't like to be called Latinos because the stereotype that Latinos all speak Spanish. Latin America is called like that because people there speak 3 Latin languages, Spanish, French and Portuguese, as opposed to English which is a Germanic language. Haitians speak French, so technically they are Latinos too, since French comes from the Latin language. The correct term is "Hispanic" if you want to refer to a Spanish Speaker.
