Right front(passenger side) of the oil pan. It is inside a black plastic canister that you have to unscrew to change the element.
This may not be much help but I have a 1984 UK Volvo 240 dl which I changed the fluid on some years ago. As I recall it was simply a case of undoing a drain plug on the transmission casing and refilling after undoing another nut physically higher up the casing.

I just changed my girlfreinds 01 S60 turbo using the link below. http://cvolvo.com/Central/Repair/B5254T.html Some considerations: You will have to remove the plastic pannel on the underside of the car. It is held in place by about 7 12MM bolts. Secondly, a standard oil filter wrench will not work, you need more clearance and hence a ratchet "cup style" should do the trick. A 2001 Volvo S60 will require a V410 "cup style" ratchet easily acquired for under $15 online. Do not try to use a regular oil filter to remove it or you will break the plastic casing.

You have to pull a plastic clip/lever up until it pops out. That will free your battery. You may have to rock it by pushing down and pulling up to loosen the clip.

There's a plastic guard on the underside of the car that must be removed so that you can get to the oil filter and drain plug. The filter itself is a canister filter, so you replace the paper filter and the rubber gasket, but reuse the plastic housing.
