It means that the On Board Diagnostics computer is receiving information from the sensor array that indicates a condition that suggests a problem with the EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) circuit. The EGR valve on that model consists of two parts - a vacuum manifold and a valve body. The hoses between the valve body and vacuum manifold could be leaking or disconnected, the gasket between the EGR valve and intake manifold could be bad or the valve itself could be stuck open or closed. If you have a handheld vacuum pump, you could attach it to the vaccum port and see if the valve will pull in when vacuum is applied. If you're not handy, it will be necessary to either find someone who is or take it to a trusted mechanic. The part costs about $100 from automotive parts suppliers.
in my haines manual, it says a p1491 is a vaccum cut bypass valve or circuit fault.
The code says one wire per one terminal.
It means that the Idle Air Control valve needs attention.
my book says code 0123 THROTTLE/PEDAL POSITION SENSOR/SWITCH A CIRCUIT HIGH INPUT
It is an error code that says the variable valve timing is out of limits, may need a timing adjustment or a new vvt solenoid
The purpse of valve lifters is exactly what it says, to lift the valve.
Connect a code scanner and see if it says anything about your Oxygen Sensor. It could also be EGR valve or PCV valve or any of a number of other potential problems.

The trouble codes 23, 31, and 32 for a 1993 Geo Metro correspond to the following issues: Code 23: Intake air temperature sensor circuit high voltage Code 31: EGR system malfunction Code 32: Exhaust gas recirculation circuit malfunction
in my exsperience egr valve code not usually the culprit try to clean all intake parts w/carb cleaner fuel inj cleaner may need to check fuel to air mix valve and remove and clean also clean butterfly valve for intake very well if thiis doesnt work repost tom and ill walk u thruogh the rest Tom my question is on 1997 ford exploer the code says insufficent flow to egr valve but replaced everything pertaining to egr system
i need to no what kind of car if it is a ford change tube and check intake hole under egr Yoah, Rob, it's a 1998 CHEVROLET Monte Carlo, says so in the question. A PO401 code doesn't usually mean there is a malfunction in the EGR valve. It often means there is an electrical problem with the EGR to PCM circuit or other sensors. If you have a scanner you can run a complete diagnostic yourself. If not, you will need a garage or dealer to run it for you.
