If your boyfriend is afraid to admit socially that the two of you are in a relationship, he may be embarrassed to be with you or he may think that you are too good for him, thus he may not want others to think of you as 'dropping your standards'; in his mind, he may be trying to save you the embarrassment of being with him socially, if that is the case. Whatever the reason, it is important to talk about it with him directly and ask him yourself- if he claims that he doesn't know why, he may be lying, as some people do this to avoid hurting others' feelings. If he refuses to tell you the reason, it may not be worth your time to stay in a relationship that your partner does not want to admit they are in. All partners should be able to show their affections and relationship status socially; by this, I do not mean passionately kissing in public or using cute little pet names 24/7 like 'sugar-pie' or 'honey-bunch'. I mean subtle tokens of affection and care, such as holding hands, small kisses from time to time, hugs, and physical closeness (generally staying close while walking, sitting, or doing other activities).
