Check for leaks, make sure gaskets are sitting correctly. Make sure the pump has prime and the filter has filled. On an above ground pool this is easily done by placing the valve in the "backwash" position while the pump is off. The pump basked should fill with water. Then run the pump until the filter has filled and the water in the sightglass is clear. Turn off the pump, move valve to "filter" position and turn the pump back on. Never move valve while the pump is running. never run the pump for more than five seconds if water is not moving through it.

Depending on the size of the pool and the size of the filter and the amount of times you have to backwash, also if you have had a lot of rain then you may need to backwash more than usual. If you put the pool in and the filter and you know how old the sand is, if you are backwashing more than usual, change the sand. If, and only if, the horsepowers are the same and the fittings are the same size, yes. Don't change the horsepower of your pump without changing your filter without consulting a professional.

Not aware that Hayward made motors. You need the pump seal, gaskets or orings and the tools to remove and reinstall the motor and the seal. The electrical connections and power need to be removed and or turned off at the circuit breaker.
Hayward Northstar is probably the best and most energy efficient. Hayward Super 2 is also a great pump and less expensive than the Northstar. Sta-Rite Dura Glass is an industry standard and very dependable.
a leak on a pipe
In most cases a booster pump is used to provide additional water pressure to an automatic pool cleaner , sometimes they are used to provide additional water flow and pressure to a connected spa. A low pressure pump may also be used to pump water through a solar heater.
The pressure increasing indicates that something is blocking the filter.
Probably below 5#'s ???
The pool pump is most likely losing the vacuum due to clogged up filters. The filters need to be checked and cleaned.
Read the owners manual.
Not necessarily, it depends on the condition of the original pump. It may have a worn or warped impeller. I would look into making sure the original pump is in good shape.
