TRANSMITTER PROGRAMMING Up to 4 Transmitter Identification Codes (TIC’s) can be programmed into receiver at any given time. 1) Open driver’s door of vehicle. Leave it open through the programming procedure. 2) Move mechanical door lock lever to the LOCK position. 3) Insert ignition key and turn it to RUN position. 4) Turn ignition to RUN position. Within 20 seconds, aim a transmitter at receiver dome and press lock button, for at least 5 seconds. Once receiver accepts programming code the driver’s door will unlock. 5) Once first transmitter has been programmed, additional transmitters (up to 4) may be programmed into receiver. Within 20 seconds of the previous transmitter programming, move the mechanical door lock lever to LOCK position. Aim another transmitter at receiver dome and press LOCK button for at least 5 seconds. The door lock will cycle again. 6) To lock the programmed codes into the receiver, the ignition must be turned off and back on within 20 seconds after programming the last transmitter’s code. At that time, all previous codes are erased from the module.
Only way to have the remote entry control programed is to have a dealer program the codes. You cannot do it yourself. Believe me I tried. I recently had my 1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee programed by a dealer. Cost less than $20.00
1) Save yourself some aggravation and make sure remote battery is good.
2) Open just the driver door (all others closed) and leave it open for the entire programming process.
3) Move the mechanical door lock to the LOCK position.
4) Insert the ignition key and turn it to the RUN (not start) position.
5) Aim the transmitter at the receiver (usually in the overhead console) and press and hold the transmitter's LOCK button for at least 5 seconds. Once the receiver accepts the signal the door will unlock.
6) If programming additional transmitters (can do up to 3 additional) then each must be programmed at this time ( if not skip to step 7). Return mechanical lock lever to the LOCK position. Using next transmitter, repeat steps 2 through 5 until door unlocks. Repeat step 6 until all transmitters have been programmed.
7) Within 20 seconds of programming the last transmitter to the receiver, the ignition must be turned off then back on. (note that if not done within the 20 seconds the entire programming sequence must be repeated). When this has been successfully done, only the transmitters programmed during this sequence will operate the locks to this vehicle.
The dealers scan tool is required.
replace the remote
No, remote start was not a factory option in 2000.
Dealer only
Must be and can only be programmed by and authorized Jeep (this also means Chrysler or Dodge) dealer. Cost around $20.00. Do yourself a favor and take BOTH remotes with you. When they reprogram, both need to be programmed in tandem.
I had the same problem. Google "keyless entry remote 2003 Jeep Grand Cherokee".
the dealer does it with a scan tool
You have to program it with a DRB (Scan tool).
dealer has to do it with factory scan tool
The dealers scan tool is required.
I found a remote for my 1997 Grand Cherokee on Ebay. type in the number "05014736". The remote if for the newer generation Grand Cherokee, but I took it to the dealer, and they programmed it for free.
Try the mirror control.
Dealer only on 96+ newer Jeep Grand Cherokee's

Possible weak battery in the remote.
I had to replace a keyless remote for my 2001 dakota. I found one off od E-bay then I had to program it using the programing sequence in the owners manual. It was really simple. I only paid something like ten buck for the remote and have had no problems.
