If you have a check engine light on, check the codes first. If not, check for vacuum leaks, especially the throttle body base gasket.
check the function of the IAC solenoid and the ECT senser
Poor fuel miliage, rough idle, no start, poor acceleration, stalling.
It maybe the Thermostat if it bad the 4.3 will quit and not start untile it cools down
Could be in need of a tune up.
Start with a full tune up including fuel and air filters, spark plugs, ignition wires, distributor cap and rotor.
It will run rough and be hard to start. Fuel consumption will probably increase. Other signs include check engine light coming on, stalling, loss of power on hills...
Check your alternator it could be malfunctioning. Sometimes it gives you warnings like this.

Your MAF sensore is either disconnected (the one on top of the intake tube) or you vac lines have become disconnected. The vac line is directly under throttle body.
The more you use the starter to start the engine the more wear is demand is placed on it. So, yes, in a sense stalling and restarting does harm the starter.
