What does “Mesopotamia” mean?

The regional toponym Mesopotamia comes from the ancient Greek root words meso ("middle") and potamia ("river") and literally means "(Land) between rivers".

It's the name for the area of the Tigris-Euphrates river system, which is modern-day Iraq, Kuwait, northeastern Syria, southeastern Turkey, and smaller parts of southwestern Iran.
