A rule of thumb is - the arc length should be the same as the diameter of the electrode. 3/32" electrode = 3/32" arc length. 1/8" electrode = 1/8" arc length etc. The thicker the electrode coating the shorter the distance from the end of the electrode to the work. E stands for electrode, 60 Is one tenth of the tensile strength in mega pascals. And the last two is polarity position and covering, so with a E6011 u have a cellulose electrode for all positions all polaritys with a tensile strength of 600 mega pascals.
