The Jim Crow laws applied only to Blacks in America. Once the Jim Crow laws were abolished, Blacks would soon have the chance to climb into on the the social classes of America.
Jim Crow is a name, but not the name of a person. The words "Jim Crow" are symbolic of racism - especially in the United States. To live in a Jim Crow nation means that the nation has rules that treat their people differently because of their ethnicity. Most of the time, however, the state does not treat them fairly, but as one race is inferior to the other(s).

Well, in most cases, someone can completely take what you are saying to mean the complete opposite. For example, Bob says to Jim that his shirt is hot. Jim takes this to mean the shirt will burn him, so he quickly takes it off. Obviously, Bob and Jim were thinking two different things. While Bob was saying that he liked Jim's shirt, Jim freaked out and took his shirt off. They were not communicating effectively because they didn't understand each other's language.
