He wants to get rid of his first wife, Catherine of Aragon, and needs an annulment. Catherine doesn't qualify for this though. So he kicks the pope out and starts his own church, making himself the head of it. Then he gives himself an annulment.

- It was a little more complicated than that. It wasn't that Catherine didn't "qualify" for an annulment as much as it was the influence her nephew, Charles V, had over the Pope at that time, given that Charles had invaded Rome. Add to this the fact Henry was reading more and more materials written by Reformists that spoke about the degradations of the Catholic Church and of the Pope, and it was a perfect recipe to make Henry grab more power for himself.
