P0300 Diagnostic Code - Random Misfire
Symptoms.
Engine may stumble or miss
Engine may be hard to start
you may notice no issues
Cause
Failing spark plugs or spark plug wires
Bad coil or coil pack
Failing oxygen sensor(s)
Bad fuel injector or more than one
Stuck exhaust valve
Bad catalytic converter
EGR valve or valve passage clogging
Bad camshaft position sensor
Bad PCM or ECM
The Fix
Best first action is a tune up, new plugs, wires, inspect all hoses and wire connections then reset the code. If it returns you will need to narrow it down to a system, coils and coil packs should be tested, catalytic converters for function ( do you smell rotten eggs?). A misfire that jumps cylinders could indicate a lean condition, do you have any other codes along with the 300? this will help clue you in to the source, check valve function to make sure they are opening and closing fully.
This is probably pone of the most difficult codes to troubleshoot, so start with the basics and work your way into the more expensive options, in many cases a good old tune up solves the problem, back it up with a fuel system cleaning and see where you stand.
A P0300 OBD code indicates a random or multiple misfire. If the last digit is a number other than zero, it corresponds to the cylinder number that is misfiring. A P0302 code, would tell you cylinder number two is misfiring. P0300 doesn't tell you specifically which cylinder(s) are mis-firing, or why.
* the engine may be harder to start * the engine may stumble / stumble, and/or hesitate * There may be no noticeable performance issues
* spark plugs or wires * coil (pack) * oxygen sensor(s) * fuel injector(s) * Burned exhaust valve * catalytic converter(s) * Stuck/blocked EGR valve / passages * camshaft position sensor * bad computer
If there are no symptoms, the easiest thing to do is to reset the code and see if it comes back.
If there are symptoms such as the engine is stumbling or hesitating, check all wiring and connectors that lead to the cylinders (i.e. spark plugs). Depending on how long the ignition components have been in the car, it may be a good idea to replace them as part of regular maintenance. replace spark plugs, spark plug wires, distributor cap, and rotor (if applicable). Otherwise, check the coils or coil packs. In some cases, the catalytic converter has gone bad. If you smell rotten eggs in the exhaust, your cat converter needs to be replaced. it could also be faulty fuel injectors.
Random misfires that jump around from one cylinder to another (read: P030x codes) also will set a P0300 code. The underlying cause is often a lean fuel condition, which may be due to a vacuum leak in the intake manifold or unmetered air getting past the airflow sensor, or an EGR valve that is stuck open.

It also makes a difference depending on what year make and model your vehicle is. I have an 04 Chevy Aveo. We got a P0300, but there was no evident misfire and found that the crankshaft position variation relearn procedure needed to be performed, but there was no real mechanical issues. Sometimes there are certain things that are common problems and vehicle specific.
