South (RVN-Republic of South Vietnam)
Pre-1964 (pre Tonkin Gulf Incident) war was officially only conducted in RVN (South Vietnam) and was strictly a guerrilla war fought by US military advisers. After the Tonkin Gulf Incident (1964) US conventional forces were introduced to RVN & the USAF & USN conducted an air war against North Vietnam. USMC aviation units supported their marines on the ground in RVN.

Preserve the RVN from communist aggression.
To preserve the RVN from a communist take-over.
Fairly broad question. But we'll try this one; the Viet War went from a guerrilla war in RVN to a full scaled (minus nukes/invasion) conventional war against North Vietnam with the continued guerrilla & conventional war in RVN. Said another way: Instead of just one guerrilla war in one country (RVN) now there were two wars (guerrilla & conventional) involving two countries N & S Vietnam. RVN=Republic of South Vietnam.
