Every country's flag has its meaning. For Vietnamese's, the whole flag represents a nation, independent and united. During the Indochina war II, the upper half of the flag was red, and the bottom half blue. The moment PAVN tank crashed through the gates of the Saigon's Independence Palace, home and workplace of south Vietnam's president, in 1975, the flag with a complete red background was first waved on top of the palace.

The red background represents Vietnamese's blood that was shed for a country's unification. The yellow star represents the one dream that all Vietnamese believe in the Vietnamese chose that flag because it represents them for who they are and what they do they not only need this flag they want this flag.

Another interpretation of the Red Vietnamese flag:

The red flag was originally the flag of the Indochinese Communist Party, which the Viet Minh later used as North Vietnam's flag during the Vietnam War and then the flag of Vietnam after North Vietnam successfully invaded South Vietnam.

The red color is the color of international communism, as seen in the deposed Soviet Union flag (red with yellow crescent) and the current Chinese flag (red with yellow stars). The star in the red Vietnamese flags signifies that Indochina is a member of the international communist community.

The other flag of Vietnam, the yellow flag with three red stripes, first emerged during the reign of emperor Thanh Thai. Yellow has always been the choice for base color for different Vietnamese flags throughout its long history. The three stripes represent three regions of the country, North, central, and South being unified as one country.

This flag was used during emperor Thanh Thai and Duy Tan's reigns but was discontinued after both Thanh Thai and his son, Duy Tan, were forced into exile by the French. The flag was reinstated by emperor Bao Dai and was used by later regimes of Ngo Dinh Diem and Nguyen van Thieu of South Vietnam.

Today, most oversea Vietnamese seeking refuge from communist ruled Vietnam only recognise the yellow and three striped flag as the true national flag of Vietnam.

The flag of Vietnam, also known as the "red flag with yellow star" (cờ đỏ sao vàng), was designed in 1940 and used that year during a Communist uprising against French rule in Cochinchina. The identity of the designer is disputed. In 1941, Vietnamese communists reorganized to fight Japanese occupation under the name Vietminh. This organization adopted the yellow star flag. When the Japanese surrendered at the end of World War II, Vietminh leader Hồ Chí Minh proclaimed the Democratic Republic of Vietnam in Hanoi with himself as president. Hồ signed a decree adopting the Vietminh flag as the flag of the DRV. The DRV became the government of North Vietnam in 1954 following the Geneva Accords. The flag was modified in 1955 to make the edges of the star sharper. The red background symbolizes blood. This element, common to flags of communist nations, refers to the red flag of the Paris Commune of 1871. Until Saigon was captured in 1975, South Vietnam used a yellow flag with three red stripes. The red flag of North Vietnam became the flag of a united Vietnam when the Socialist Republic of Vietnam was formed in 1976.
