A drill press is a large drilling machine that stands on a very heavy steel base. A 3" or 4" steel column extends up either about 6 feet for a floor model or 3 for a bench model. At the top of this column is an elongated box with the motor at the back, driving a shaft with a 4 tier pulley above it. The front of the box contains a hollow shaft with a spindle inside it and a drill chuck on the lower end. In the middle of the column, a steel table, usually about 15 " square can move up and down the column to adjust work height.

Is a drill press a robot?

No, it's a machine tool, like a table saw or a lathe. A drill press is mostly used to bore holes. It has a large vertical spindle that holds bits that can be lowered onto a workpiece. Unlike a mill or a lathe, a drill press is rarely automated (which is what you might have meant by 'robot').

What is a drill press vise?

It's a flat vice that clamps to the drill press table, to hold small items being drilled.

What is meant by the capacity of a drill press?

Drilling capacity indicates the maximum diameter a given power drill or drill press can produce in a certain material. Typically a given drill will have its capacity specified for different materials, i.e., 10mm for steel, 25mm for wood, etc.

What are the functionS of a drill press?

-The drill press can take bits of up to 1/2 shank size and many of those are drill bits up to an inch wide. ( it's quite common to have large drills with reduced shanks) -Other items like large hole saws can be used, as well as 'fly cutters', which are cutting bits on the end of a movable beam. These can usually cut holes in thin materials like plexiglass sheet, up to a foot in diameter. Forstner bits up to 6 or 8 inch can be used, these cut large, flat bottomed holes for installing clocks and other instruments. Milling bits can be used to 'mill' large areas of rough surface to smoothness, and 'square hole tools' can also be used. The large drill press is a very versatile tool.

What is a milling vise?

A milling vise is generally much heavier and more precisely made than a typical bench or drill press vise.

How do you drill a ceramic tile?

Drilling ceramic tile can be accomplished with a carbide tipped drill bit such as one for masonry or concrete but a better choice is a bit designed to drill glass which is much harder Most home improvement stores carry such bits and they are only a bit more than regular bit sets. A glass bit looks like a spade on the end of a shank while the masonry bit looks like a traditional twist drill.
