The knock sensor is supposed to detect variations in the sound and vibrations that your engine makes - knocks, in other words. When it notices changes in the noises/sounds, it is supposed to calibrate the engine a bit (timing, maybe?) to compensate for the change. It is basically trying to make some assumptions based on what it is hearing. I also have a Nissan Altima (2000). If you need to replace your knock sensor it is almost impossible to reach without lifting the car up at a service center. Jack stands and jack didn't help me. I let a shop take care of it.
I forgot to mention that it is located underneath and near the rear of your engine. You have to use a pretty small-handled wrench or socket to take it off.

Knock sensorThe knock sensor for a 1996 Nissan Altima is located on the backside of the block above the oil filter. But before you go and change it out, run a tank of the best/hightest rated gas you can find and see if that fixes the problem. On my 1995 the Knock sensor is located under the plenum and intake manifold on top of the middle of the block.
