Canonization is the formal process in the Catholic church of declaring an individual a saint. This simply means that we on Earth formally recognize that the individual is (to the best of our knowledge) in Heaven, and in full Communion with God.

How did saint albert the great become a saint?

Saint Albert the Great was canonized as a saint by the Catholic Church due to his reputation for scholarship, teaching, and virtue. He was known for his contributions to philosophy and theology, particularly his work reconciling faith and reason. After his death, his holiness and impact on the Church led to his recognition as a saint.

What is the definition of canonization in the Catholic Catechism?

Canonization means that the Pope makes a beautified person a saint. The answer above is partially correct; however, there is a little more to it. A lay person can only be canonized after they have performed three miracles and these miracles have to be documented by the Catholic Church. When that has been done, then this person will be canonized a Saint. I'm not sure, but I think one of the last people to be canonized a Saint was Mother Theresa. Canonization is the lengthy process by which a candidate's sainthood is verified by the Catholic Church. There has to be no doubt that the person is in Heaven.

Who was canonized a saint while they were alive?

No person is ever canonized while still living. If it ever happened in history (I have no knowledge of it) it was a monumental blunder. The idea of canonization into sainthood in the Roman Catholic church is that it is a reliable declaration that the person's soul has ascended into heaven.

Can only Catholics be canonized?

The answer depends on what you mean by "Canonized." One who is "Canonized" is one who is officially placed into the "Canon" which is to say placed into the official public prayer of the Church. That they are "Canonized" is the Church's recognition of their holy life, and the fact that they are now a "Saint" or one who is now in heaven with God. Understood this way, the answer to the question is "Yes, one must be Catholic in order to be Canonized." However, this is not the same thing as saying "Only Catholics are in heaven" or "Only Catholics can be saints." It is to say that as part of the official public prayer of the Church, the Church can only give official recognition to those who lived their lives in full union with the Catholic Church. Someone who was a great Christian, but not in union with the Catholic Church might be a saint---but----they were never in full union with the Catholic Church. Therefore the Church cannot "canonize" them because to do so would be to place them in the "canon" of the official public prayer of the Church. If the Church were to do this, the Church would be giving implicit belief that "All religions are the same, it does not matter what you believe, all religions are equally valid." Some liberal Catholic Churches are known for adding names to the "Canon" especially in the "Litany of the Saints;" of those who they believe were a good person or are in heaven. Such a practice is NOT permitted.

What does it mean to be canonized?

Canonization means that the individual has been thoroughly investigated by the Church and it was determined that the person is undoubtedly in Heaven and worthy of veneration. To canonize means to declare the person is truly a saint.

Can a Church of England person receive communion in a Catholic Church?

No, a Catholic should not receive communion in anything but a Catholic Church.

Do you have to be Catholic to be a saint?

No, you do not have to be Catholic to be recognized as a saint. In the Catholic Church, the process of canonization involves verifying the person's life of holiness and miracles attributed to their intercession, but other Christian denominations, such as the Eastern Orthodox Church, Anglican Communion, and some Protestant churches, also venerate saints.
