Best Answer

You should include your basic information such as name, address, email and phone number. You should also include references, schooling and a list of work experience. You could also include hobbies, special certifications and qualities that make you suited for the job you are applying for.

Top of page: Name, address, contact information (appropriate phone numbers, e-mail address, etc.).

Goal or Objective (optional): A simple statement that tells your personal goal in applying for the position; how this job fits into your overall career plans and suits your previous or current preparation for those plans. The objective statement is improved if you can also show that you know or understand the objectives of the employer, especially what they want from the person in that job. All of this stated concisely in a few sentences.

A Chronological Resume

Work history: In chronological order, most recent at the top to oldest at the bottom, showing the 1) length of job, 2) title of job held, 3) employer name and address, 4) description of job with duties. The description can vary from a strict list of duties to a description of the important elements of the position. Work history should be no older than about ten years, unless for a specific reason or profession.

Education and training: List any formal education, certificates, or degrees and any informal training or specific training provided by a previous employer that directly pertains to the position for which you are applying.

Personal: This is used only for information that pertains to the position for which you are applying. It includes any hobby, amateur or professional clubs, organizations, community service, or other activities that you have done or are currently a participant.

A Skills or Functional Resume

Top of page: Name, address, same as above.

Goal or Objective: same as above.

Skills and Abilities: Grouped by type of skills you are able to perform based on previous experience. For example, under 'customer service' you would list the skills necessary to serve (and satisfy) customer' needs; under 'computer skills' you would list all of the software and functions you have been able to use and perform on the computer.

Education and Training: same as above.

Work History: same as 1, 2, and 3 above. The description of duties and responsibilies are replaced by the Skills and Abilities section above.

Personal: same as above.

End of Resumes

Most people end with a statement similar to, "References provided upon request." If you're mailing or emailing your resume and references have already been requested to be provided with it, the appropriate statement is, "References attached." You should have prepared your list of references when you prepare the resume itself because you will be asked for this if you are called on for an interview.

Unless there is a specific reason or certain professional information is appropriate, a resume should be limited to a single page. Examples of each type of resume are on the links below.
