A taxidermist "mounts" an animal, be it bird, mammal or fish. In some cases reptiles are also mounted, but the preferred method for reptiles is called freeze-drying.
Modern day taxidermists use the skin of an animal to create a life like "clone" of the animal after is has passed on. Skins are cured then tanned in various solutions/chemicals in order to preserve them. After the tanning process the skin is mounted on a form or body that resembles the shape of the animals original body or muscle tissue. These days a form of urethane foam or a similar material is used. Glass eyes are inserted during this process and finishing touches are added with airbrushes and various paints to complete the mount and re-create a life like looking bird, mammal or fish.
A fairly new process of taxidermy involves only making fiberglass reproductions, mainly of fish, but often also thick skinned animals like hippo, rhino or elephant. In this case the taxidermist has to esnure that the initial mould is as acurate as possible, so that the cast, once painted and completed , resembels the actual animal.
The difference between a tax collector and a taxidermist is that the taxidermist is only after the skin.
