The "10" means it has 1% tin and the "20" means it has 2% nickel - the tin allowed the metal to flow more efficiently into the mold which = fewer hot spots and the nickel added strength which = longer bore life.

Chevy does not cast the block size onto the block. once you see a big block compared small block you will know the difference. at a glance with nothing to compare it to id say look at the head. small block heads have one exhaust port close the ends and two exhaust ports real close together in the middle. the big blocks exhaust ports are evenly spaced and not close together at all. If it is a 350 or smaller it is a small block. If it is a 396 or larger it is a big block except for the 400 which was made in both small block and big block configuration.

No there is no "big" or "small" block Pontiacs. The terms "small" and "big" block are Chevy & ford terms. Pontiac blocks were thesame physical size from the 1955 287 right through the last 400 cast in 1978. All blocks had a bore centerline of 4.62 inches, which puts them right between the small block Chevy (4.40 inches) and the big block Chevy (4.84 inches). There were short deck versions built- the 1969-1970 303 race engine (about 25 made), and the production 265,301 built from 1977-1981.
