A list is a written or printed series of connected items which are written consecutively, usually one below each other.

e.g. a shopping list, used by a shopper so that they can look for and buy the things they have previously decided upon.

The contents of something is what in contained in something. e.g. The contents of a someone's handbag might be: a purse with some money in it; some keys; a mobile phone; a pen; some makeup or a lipstick; a handkerchief or tissues; a shopping list, and a cheese sandwich.

A 'contents list' is therefore a written or printed itemised record of the contents of something.

Here is an imaginary CONTENTS LIST of a gift box being sent to a young relative or friend:

  1. greetings card
  2. money
  3. red scarf
  4. 6 pairs of socks
  5. book token
  6. 24 family photographs
  7. iPod player
  8. Blackberry Curve phone
  9. 2 tickets for a music concert
  10. sundry packaging materials

CONTENTS LIST: Example

Some electrical products sold in boxes. On the outside of the box may be a contents list.

On the box of new cell phone (mobile phone) there may be a contents list, itemising such things as

  • phone
  • carrying case
  • sim card
  • battery
  • adapter/battery charger
  • earphone lead
  • USB lead

USES OF CONTENTS LISTS

-It tells you what you are actually buying.

-It serves as a check list so that manufacturer's can ensure that they have put all the necessary parts in the box before wrapping, sealing and dispatch.
