The front rotors are out of round are warped. Turn are replace rotors and be sure to replace the brake pads even if thay look good. I would also check the tie rods too.
They can be a bit worn, but not much. Look at a new one or ask at parts store, thickness, then measure yours.
Brake rotors or drums need to be machined or replaced. If it causes steering wheel shaking, check front brakes. If happens when applying parking brake look to rear brake problem.
If you are saying it vibrates while applying the brakes just before you come to a stop, then the brake rotors are warped. You will need to have them turned and trued, and replace the front brake pads. If you are saying it vibrates while you are sitting still, then look for a vacuum leak.If you are saying it vibrates while applying the brakes just before you come to a stop, then the brake rotors are warped. measure inside diameter of brake drum (where brake shoes touch drum) and measure outside diameter of brake rotors. usually if you look at wheel side of drums and rotors the size is stamped in millimeters on each
take off the wheel cap, take off the wheels. bleed the calipers. there should be a bleeder valve. take off the calipers. clean them up because there probably rusted. id paint them to. unbolt the rotors. you'll see the bolts right there, put new the ones on. put the calipers back on. throw some new break pads up in there. tires back on. lower the car. fill it with some dot4 brake fluid. make sure to clean the brake fluid resivior off real good because you do NOT WANT ANY DIRT IN YOUR BRAKE FLUID... " BRAKE FALUIRE" i belive is what they call that, you will find the brake fluid when you open your hood. standing directly in the front the bottle in the back to the right. like if some guys head was where it was and you were driving your car, you can look directy at him and he can look directly at u ITS RIGHTT THERE. then the the car. The stock rotors from the cougar glaze over real easy. i say go on eBay look for some rotors from r1 concepts sloted and drilled performance. Even if your not looking to upgrade they make a difference. 200$ they will send u front and back rotors and all new pads. they make a big difference. but what do i know im only 17. hope it helps!
It's more than likely your front brakes and the sound is reverberating thru the car look at the rotors on front and feel them and see if they are ruff and grooved if so you need to do a brake job as for the warning light that will not come on unless it's low on fluid or the abs senses a problem.
Your car came with the option of having rear disc brake or drums. The simple way to tell is to look the the wheel and see if you see rotors if you dont see rotors than you have drum brakes
If you clean the rotor up alittle you will see it STAMPED on the rotor. Look at it and you will find it. That will be factory specs. If your smart, you will REPLACE the rotors and pads and you will have done a good brake job.
Are you changing the front or rear brakes - if rear are they disc brakes? Are you planning to replace the brake rotors as well? I have done 100s of brake jobs on these cars and they are a very simple design. Don't let the look of them fool you and don't be worried about ABS brakes - you won't get near the components for that system.
what do brakes look like when they go bad, how far can rotors go?
Yes! It could have either disc brake pads or brake shoes in the rear. Look behind or through the wheel to see if the car has brake drums and shoes or brake rotors and calipers with brake pads.
