Its just like a birth mark but for dogs, my dog has TONS on her tongue and shes had them ever sence she was a puppy
Possible that it is a Catahoula. I saw a very gray dog with small black spots, and have been looking for this answer myself. So far some Catahoula's are the closest I've seen.
The dog that has big paws with black spots on the pads... (the dogs from guam)
[This usually means that the dog is a mutt and has some Chow breed in it. Chows have black (purple) tongues, so when they have mix breed pups, the puppies have purple dots on their tongues.] CORRECTION: A number of breeds have black or blue tongues. If every dog that has blotches on its tongue were part Chow, all I can say is that those Chows have surely gotten around! Plus, my dog is a registered purebred! She is a blue merle Australian Shepherd. I've wondered if the blue merle gene sometimes causes black splotches on the tongue. Even her skin is merled, not just her hair! Could somebody answer this question who doesn't feel inclined to be insulting? Thanks.
I, myself am a proud owner of a thirteen year old chow! many people believe that chows have blue tongues, or black tongues but they actually have purple tongues! and the chow is the only dog with the amazing coloured tongue! Hope this helped! :)
It could be a Blue Tick Coonhound.

Some dog breeds actually have black (or blue) tongues and gums. Ask your vet if the coloration in your dog is normal or not.
if what your calling "black spots" are actually more of a purple color it could mean that they have some chow chow in them i know chows have purple on their tongue and i have heard something of an old wifes tale that a dog with a purple tongue is a very smart dog Golden retrievers are known to have black spots. This does not mean that your dog is mixed by any means. Google black spots and goldies. you will see that there have been AKC champions that have had black spots.
Nothing happens. Black tongue's is due to extra pigmentation, like freckles, and does not alter the dog's personality in any way.
No, they have a pink tongue if they are purebred, the Samoyed has a purple tongue. If the dog is mixed with the Samoyed the tongue may have spots. Although the above may be true... it might not be the case. The dogs tongue might simply have some heavy pigmented tongue cells! It's kind of like a birth mark in humans.
Because Chows are the dogs most known as having black or black-spotted tongues, some mistakenly assume that a dog with a black tongue is a Chow or at least part Chow. In reality, there are many other breeds of dog that may have black spots on their tongue or gums. The Chinese Shar-Pei (commonly referred to as the 'wrinkle dog') is another breed that is known to have a black tongue. Many breeds are known to have tongues or gums with black spots, prompting less knowledgeable owners to think they may have a dog that is of mixed parentage rather than a purebred. The following breeds are ALL known to have black tongues:Airedale (If purebred, they only have black spots, not an entirely black tongue and it does relate to Chow Chow bloodlines in the breed development in this situation)AkitaAustralian Cattle DogAustralian ShepherdBelgian SheepdogBelgian MalinoisBichon FriseBull MastiffCairn TerrierCollieCocker SpanielDalmationDoberman PinscherEnglish SetterGerman Shepherd DogGolden RetrieverGordon SetterGreat PyraneesIrish SetterKeeshondLabrador RetrieverMastiffNewfoundlandPomeranianPugRhodesian RidgebackRottweilerSiberian HuskyTibetan Mastiffas well as several other breeds that are less well known. The black spots on a dog's tongue are a result of excessive pigment, much the same as freckles or birthmarks in people.
