If a circuit is grounded in AC it's for saftey like the second answer, in DC it's the route the electricity takes back to the battery from the circuit.

∙ 15y agoWhen the term "a grounded conductor" is used it usually means that there is a breakdown in the insulation of the conductor and the resistance to ground instead of being 5 megohms it is lower than 1/2 a meg. After wires have been pulled into a conduit system, engineer's specs usually ask that the conductors be megged before being energized. When the conductors are energized, not been megged and there is a ground, the current flows through the wire to the insulation breakdown and then to ground. Depending on the resistance of the insulation breakdown it may or may not trip the breaker. A real low resistance ground fault is the same as a short circuit and the fault should trip the breaker.

Grounding conductor (Safety Ground or Protective Earth) The groundED conductor is the power return, intended as a current return path from the load back to the source to complete the "circuit." Its insulation is White, gray or a non-green color with white stripes. The National Electric Code requires it be connected to earth ("groundED ") at the service entrance and usually only there. The groundING conductor is usually the safety ground which serves as an emergency current return path in the event of a circuit fault or overvoltage.
