he's a sargeant heading for hell.................
It is redcoats.
blue white stripes
The three thin white stripes that are found on the service dress blue uniform of the United States Navy, called 'piping', have a very interesting history. The vast majority of our naval uniform influence comes from the British. There is a belief that the three stripes represent the three major victories of Lord Admiral Nelson...but this is untrue. The piping was placed on the sailor's dress blue uniform to break up the solid blue of the uniform, and does not represent anything.
Could it have been red.
There is a picture on this Website http://www.kidport.com/RefLib/usaHistory/CivilWar/Uniforms.htm

They have 4 stripes, and they have 2 stars.
Sgt. Snorkel typically wears three stripes on the sleeve of his uniform, indicating his rank as a sergeant.

I believe it's found on the uniform beret. See the Wiki for British SAS uniform.
It sounds like you are describing a collar brass insignia for Infantry. The Army had several Branches such as Infantry, Ordnance, Air Corps, Legal, Medical, etc. A soldier wore a round brass insiginia that was 1.0 inch diameter on the collar of his uniform that indicated his branch of service. On this disc was an emblem that was a symbol of his branch. The symbol for the infantry was crossed rifles. Notice that a soldier may be assigned to an Infantry Division but be a part of the Medial service or the Artillery. Therefore, the insignia he wore would reflect this specialty and not the Infantry. This branch insignia was worn on the LEFT collar. On the Right collar was worn a similar disc with "US" on it.
The colours of German and British uniform were grey and khaki respectively
General Infantry, or Government Issue. Is highly debated which is true
