honestly,
if my girlfriend said that to me I'd be really weirded out, mostly because we have the kind of relationship in which we both openly declare our love for one another, so her saying "I hide I love you behind I like you" would make me think that she doesn't want to tell me she loves me any more but doesn't want to hurt me.
equally someone could say it to you meaning, 'when I tell you I like you, I really mean I love you' but then... well, who are they hiding the 'I love you' from and why can't they just come out and say it!?
