On my 2002 Limited it was an indication of pending transmission failure. First year of major redesign, transmission shop said filler tube too short/small to allow sufficient fluid to avoid overheating. Ultimately required a rebuild.
As an aside, was also first year for IRS on the 4.0L Explorer, have had to have the same right rear hub replaced twice. That mechanic says "design flaw", not sure I buy that 100%

I was looking at the 2006 Ford Explorer Owner Guide and the wrench light is the Powertrain Malfunction Indicator . It lights up when a powertrain or 4x4 fault has been detected , take it to the dealer

It means the overdrive is turned off... it's typically a button on the side of the transmission shift column.
