ITS HARD TO TELL THE SPECIFIC REASON A WARNING LIGHT LIGHTS UP ON A VEHICLE WITH OUT CHECKING IT, BUT A BLINKING LIGHT USUALLY MEANS HAVE CHECK ASAP. A STEADY LIGHT MEANS HAVE IT CHECK AT YOUR CONVINIENCE.
If the check engine light is blinking that means an engine cylinder misfire has been detected
When ever the service engine light is blinking you risk doing serious damage to the catalytic converter. I would recommend not using the vehicle until the problem is fixed. Replacing the cat can be very expensive. Have a trusted mechanic diagnose and correct the engine problem.

you have a cylinder misfire
My car starts but it shuts off it says ck engine
can mean alot...take it to a professional and if it starts blinking, pull over and call a tow truck.....
blinking
the motor is prolly flooding you might have a stuck valve
On our 2000 Silverado 2500 the blinking can mean a misfiring cylinder or ours also does this from "extended" periods of high RPM operation, like when driving over 70 mph. I feel our truck is especially sensitive to this because the rear end has the 4.1 gear set, I have often wondered if a truck equiped with 3.73 ratio or 3.42 ratio would still do this.
-turn contact off. -press brake and accelerator at the same time -hold for 30 secs, when the service lamp starts blinking, release pedals and the light goes off ...until your next oil change is due.
Plymouth Scamp
12 YEAR OLD CAR, PROBABLY A FEW MILES. ONCE THE ENGINE STARTS TO WARM UP, THE OIL PRESSURE DROPS (TOLERENCES BIGGER) AND THE "IDIOT LIGHT COMES ON. IF CAR IS FULL OF OIL, DON'T SWEAT IT.
