I think it's a way of motivating ones self, for instance if I didn't feel particularly good about doing a piece of work, I would tell myself that after I'd completed it I'd meet up with my mates.
Meeting up with my mates would be the reward that I gave to myself on the condition that I completed the work, which gets the work completed because I want the reward I'm promising myself on completion.
