∙ 9y ago"Semi" as a prefix can mean "partially", or "sort-of". "Arid" means dry or desert-like. so "semiarid" - usually written as "semi-arid" - means partially or sort of dry or desert-like.
Areas with some rainfall but not much, or which have long periods with little or no rain are considered "semi-arid". Examples would be much of Southern California, where we have some rain in the winter but months without any rain.
