It stands for sport and when you drive with it there it lets the engine rev higher for any given speed. So say at 40MPH in drive the rpms might be 3000 and in sport at 40 mph it might be 4000 rpms.

My '97 won't shift out of 1st gear when its cold (it will after it warms up). I found that pushing the "S" button will enable it to shift when cold. It has worked every time so far.
