It's easy to forget or not to notice, especially in a new car or a rental, which side of the pump to pull up to in a gas (petrol) station. In many automobiles, there is a little icon of a gas pump either on the left or right side of the fuel gauge. In some cars, you will see an arrow next to the picture.
If this is a manual shift transmission, the arrow means it is time to shift up a gear. This is there to help you get the best gas mileage.
If engine has fuel pump mounted on the engine then it is leaking gas into crankcase.
It means you have a fuel injection system not a carburetor.
In most cars it is as simple as looking at your gas indicator on the dashboard. Usually on the fuel gauge is a small picture of a gas pump. On one side or the other of the picture there will be a small triangle arrow that points to the side that the gas cap is located on.
If you are referring to the little arrow under the gas symbol, the arrow points to the side of the car that the gas cap is on. Very useful if you drive a lot of different cars!
