It protects the people by limiting the power of the government. Every amendment in the Bill of Rights lays out what the government cannot do. They prevent certain laws from being written, and certain actions from being taken by government officials. This ensures that every person in the country is allowed to do the things that are laid out in the bill rights, and that the government cannot stop them from doing these things.
Keep in mind it only restricts government from making rules. The bill of rights does not apply to private companies, who are allowed to make rules prohibiting things protected by the bill of rights.
