Farmers plant their crops in the winter time because winter has the most rain, and they harvest in summer because it is too hot to plant crops in summer time.

Actually, the above answer is relevant only for those countries where snowy winters never exist, such as Greece or the Middle East, definitely not Canada or the USA. Where snowy winters DO exist, the best time to harvest crops is in the autumn because seeding is done in the spring, crops are grown in the summer before being harvested in the fall/autumn.

What are the necessary characteristics of a good farmer?

Good farmers use good farming techniques, like rotating crops and planting buffer zones when growing GMO crops. They also know when to plant and when to harvest, though this can vary somewhat from season to season. They also implement good weed and insect controls so as not to overuse synthetic fertilizer and pesticides that pollute the environment.
